Role and Facility Information

Williams Lake is in BC’s Central Interior Region, otherwise known as the Cariboo Chilcotin Region, and is famous for the annual Williams Lake Stampede. There is a population of approximately 35,000 in Williams Lake and surrounding areas with a total population of 62,000 for the Cariboo Regional District. A vast array of lakes, rivers and hiking and biking trails, makes Williams Lake and the surrounding area a great place for outdoor enthusiasts to camp, fish, hunt and play during the summer months while winter months bring the enjoyment of snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, and ice fishing for the winter months. Williams Lake has something for everyone.

Cariboo Memorial is under renovation with planned completion of 2026! Currently, CMH is a Level 2 Community Hospital in Williams Lake with 28 inpatient beds. CMH hospital offers ER, OR, Med-Surg, and Obstetrical units. Lab and diagnostic imaging and outpatient Hemodialysis Unit are operated on-site. The CMH redevelopment project includes an addition to the existing hospital as well as renovations to the existing facility. The addition will add 25 in-patient beds for a total of 53, a new emergency department and mental-health unit.

Work is underway for expansion at CMH to include an 8 bed inpatient psychiatry unit, scheduled to open in 2026. Come be a part of the excitement!

This is a new position so you can tailor your practice to your specific interests. Your income would be primarily fee for service. Some sessions are available. And no overhead! Your office will be in the mental health facility which is managed by Interior Health. Your team includes social workers, therapists, and outreach nurses. Our primary shared goals include meeting community needs using innovative integrated care models, and collaborating with family practitioners to develop and implement a patient medical home model, consistent and aligned with the IHA Mental Health and Substance Use Program and with Ministry and Government priorities. The successful candidate, in collaboration with local family practitioners, will also provide urgent support to the Caribou Memorial Hospital’s ER and the Gateway Crisis Stabilization Unit, an assessment and short term intervention alternative to hospital-based care which addresses crisis response, stabilization services and referral for follow up services. There are also opportunities to work with indigenous populations. Tele-psychiatry support provided by psychiatrists located in Kamloops.

We would welcome participation in quality improvement projects, program development activities, provision of service in remote Aboriginal communities in-person or via telehealth, and, engagement in community education activities. UBC teaching opportunities also exist through the UBC Department of Psychiatry.
