Role and Facility Information
The medical clinic is operated by the Cortes Community Health association in a lovely, modern clinic space with 2 clinic rooms, a nurses room, a remote pharmacy, and a treatment space (for emergency use and minor procedures) with 2 beds. We are looking for 2-3 part time physicians (or 1 full time if someone is interested). The majority of our patients are family practice or same day/urgent care. The clinic is open Mon-Fri, with appointments 9am-4pm, lunch break 12-130pm. We use MedAccess EMR. Travel offsite to Klahoose First Nations outreach clinic every other Tuesday. Labs are done/sent out twice a week. No imaging available on island. We primarily refer patients for diagnostics or emergency care to Campbell River. Overhead is $310 per day worked.
Our team consists of lovely MOAs, an Island Health RN (shared position) and 1 FTE MD (shared between a group of 5 physicians).
Occasional after hours coverage rarely needed (ie - home visits, palliative care, emergency assistance), but no formal on call. For after hours emergencies, the majority of patients are managed by our paramedic team who will first consult with a remote transport physician, and take patients off island.
Community Information
Cortes is a beautiful remote Northern Gulf island, 2 ferries away from Campbell River. The island has a vibrant community of approximately 1000 permanent residents, with many more seasonal residents. The Klahoose First Nations are based in Squirrel Cove, and there is a public school for primary to grade 8. There are plenty of nature and recreation opportunities with lovely hiking trails, beaches, lakes and protected forests. Home to Hollyhock retreat centre, as well as the Gorge Marina, we get a lot of visitors coming from near and far.
