Role and Facility Information

The Division Head of Internal Medicine, (the “Division Head”), is responsible for the organization of the Medical Staff for a designated division and for monitoring the quality of medical care provided to patients by members of the division, or within that discipline, through processes defined in the Medical Staff Rules. The Division Head shall assist the Department Head in the management of the Division on the authority delegated by the Department Head.

The Services will be provided at Vancouver Coastal Health and includes oversight of the General Internal Medicine programs at VGH and UBCH. It is expected that, on average, the time required to perform the Services will be approximately 5 hours per week

Key Deliverables
• Effective, efficient, and reliable communication mechanisms with division members.
• Awareness of best practices and benchmarking within regional, provincial, and national organizations.
• Lead through coaching, guiding modeling key behaviours, and encouraging dialogue to create a respectful and motivating environment.
• Support quality improvement, utilization management, outcomes evaluation, and performance measurement.

Specific Responsibilities and Deliverables

• Chairs Division meetings.
• Works with the Department Head to develop a functional and collaborative division and department.
• Evaluates and makes recommendations that are consistent with the needs of the CoC and the department concerning persons wishing to be appointed to the Medical Staff. This includes recommendations regarding credentialing, admitting privileges, and privileges as outlined in the privileging dictionary.
• Completes regular performance evaluation and credentialing of Division members in alignment with the pre-determined schedule set by VCH. For clarity, this includes preparing for and attending all reappointment meetings with the SMD, the Coastal and Regional Department Heads, and others as required.
• Responsible for overall professional practice leadership and direction to the members of the Division.
• Participates in assigned committees and councils within VCH and the CoC, or designates a delegate.
• Addresses performance or behavioral issues of specific members of the Division and, where necessary, submits reports and recommendations to the Department Head, the Senior Medical Director (“SMD”), and the Area Medical Advisory Committee (“AMAC”).
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Reporting Protocol

• The Division Head, Internal Medicine, shall be responsible to the Department Head, Medicine.
• In relation to academic matters, the Division Head is accountable, when applicable, to the Academic Department Head of the Faculty of Medicine.

Performance Review & Evaluation

Administrative appointments at VCH may be renewable upon satisfactory review.

Criteria for satisfactory review include:
• Continued commitment to excellence in patient care (quality of care and service delivery);
• Maintenance of required specialty certifications in your specialty while in active clinical practice;
• Demonstrated achievement of annual continuing medical education goals (as established by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as applicable);
• Leadership and interpersonal skills;
• Collaboration across services/programs/portfolios to plan and resolve issues in order to meet the needs and mandates of VCH as a whole;
• Successful management of physician managers and related issues within the portfolio;
• Effective management of utilization and resources within the portfolio; and
• Compliance with the Rules and Regulations and policies of VCH.

• Uses sound business acumen to develop and foster collaboration and effective working relationships with stakeholders that promote cooperative goals and contribute to an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.
• Applies superior conflict management skills and expertise to persuade and negotiate effective resolution of issues / disputes.
• Inspires a shared vision and aligns performance goals and objectives for medical staff to ensure match with service delivery strategy while maintaining group cohesiveness, motivation, commitment and effectiveness.
• Provides timely and appropriate advice and consultation utilizing effective targeted communication strategies to gain acceptance of recommendations and to facilitate effective decision making and operations within the intent of the medical by-laws.
• Builds credibility, understanding and trust in the external community to assist the Communities of Care and VCH to meet its strategic objectives.
