Role and Facility Information

Come work as a Nurse Practitioner Lead with Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH)!

Reporting to the Director and Executive Director of Nurse Practitioners and with a matrix reporting relationship to the Executive Director, Indigenous Health. The NP lead will be integral for building and maintaining relationships with nations and indigenous clinics/ organizations, as well as supporting indigenous NPs. The NP lead guides Indigenous Health NPs to integrate Indigenous knowledge and cultural safety practices into standardization of clinical practice standards, regulations and best practices throughout the organization that is consistent with VCH and the Indigenous Health department’s mission, vision, and values.

The NP lead will work with their NP leadership team and Indigenous Health to develop policy and standards, and the creation of a centre of excellence for Indigenous Nurse Practitioners. With the aim of delivering Culturally Safe care to patients that is in alignment with both Indigenous practices and with organizational priorities. You will provide leadership and expert consultative advice on NP scope of practice and integration of Indigenous knowledge that will enhance the practice environments and achieve culturally safe care that is effective and efficient. Mentorship and support are accessible for NP leaders looking to grow into this role.

As the Indigenous Health NP Lead with VCH, you will:

• Support the development of strategies and structures that promote effective implementation, adoption, role development and sustainment of the Nurse Practitioner within the urban and rural Indigenous sites in partnership with Indigenous Health and Indigenous leaders within the network and Nations.

• Keep informed about evolving Indigenous health trends and practices, share knowledge and support Nurse Practitioners to integrate evidence-based practice in the delivery of quality care/services.

• Ensure that effective processes are in place to assess Indigenous patient risks, identify risk mitigation strategies and monitor risk throughout a patient’s visit/interaction with VCH.

• Participate in key initiatives that align with Ministry strategic initiatives and mandates that impact VCH NPs and patients.

• Monitor practice trends, identifies opportunities to promote innovation, effective partnerships, quality improvement, and consistent delivery of quality care throughout VCH. Develops mechanisms for engagement and leadership with respect to academic partnerships, opportunities for fellowships, preceptorships, mentoring, teaching and research.

• Work with NP leadership and Indigenous Health to ensure that effective processes are in place that align with Medical Affairs, the Department of Nurse Practitioners, and VCH medical staff rules and bylaws, VCH policy, Ministry/Provisional policy and legislation, and professional standards.

• Represent VCH Nurse Practitioners working within the Indigenous Health Network on regional, provincial, and external agency committees.

Education & Experience

• Current practicing registration as a Nurse Practitioner with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

• Minimum of five (5) years' experience as a Nurse Practitioner including progressive clinical practice, education, research, project management or leadership experience; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Mentorship and leadership are available for the successful candidate.

• Maintains their clinical Nurse Practitioner practice in their area of expertise/interest at a minimum 0.2 FTE, and must be eligible and maintain active, provisional, or consulting membership on the VCH medical staff.

• Preference given to candidates identifying as Indigenous, including First Nations, Metis, or Inuit.

Role Specific Expertise:

• Develops and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners to promote and enhance services provided with sensitivity to diversity and Indigenous lens.

• Practices the recognition, inclusion and support of all types and aspects of diversity at all stages of engagement, with an understanding of the issues faced by people from equity-deserving groups.

• Excellent ability to foster collaborative and effective working relationships to support professional practice of VCH Indigenous Health NPs and their ongoing development and contribute to an atmosphere of trust and mutual respect.

• Experience in facilitating, collaborating, and negotiating for effective resolution of professional practice issues.

• Demonstrated ability to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate programs and planned changes.

• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with various groups and agencies.

• Demonstrated ability to develop detailed parameters for clinical practice changes, and negotiate and implement change management within complex clinical environments.

• Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor and build consensus across Nurse Practitioners and interprofessional areas across the organization.

• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of nursing legislation, statutes, regulations, and professional standards of practice.

• Demonstrated ability to monitor and evaluate current trends and issues relating to Nurse Practitioner and nursing professional practice.

• Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities that promote improved quality clinical care and project/program implementation, management, and evaluation.

• Proficiency in the use of related technology and software applications.

• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders in a diverse community.

• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers working in publicly-funded health care facilities are required to report their past receipt of certain vaccines or history of certain infections. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks. For all new hires and appointments to Vancouver Coastal Health, you will be asked to provide this information as part of the onboarding process.
