Role and Facility Information
Position Summary:
Providence Health Care (PHC) is seeking up to ten Addiction Medicine physicians to join the Clinical
Addiction Program at St. Paul’s Hospital (SPH) in downtown Vancouver.
PHCs Clinical Addiction Program is one of the largest interdisciplinary addiction programs in North
America providing evidence-based care to a diverse range of patients who have a substance use
disorder in both an inpatient and outpatient setting. The Program also provides supervision and
teaching to a variety of medical trainees including (but not limited to): medical students, residents,
fellows and enhanced skills trainees. The Departments within the Division where physicians hold their appointments are: Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Medicine and Psychiatry.
Hours/overnight call requirements:
Weekdays: The Clinical Addiction Program currently has 4 inpatient Addiction Medicine Consult
Teams (AMCT) that provide timely consultation and longitudinal follow-up for individuals with a
substance use disorder at SPH. The team collaborates extensively with physicians in the emergency department as well as admitting physicians from medicine, surgery and psychiatry. Outpatient care (scheduled and walk-in) is also provided by two physicians simultaneously at the Rapid Access Addiction Clinic (RAAC) at SPH as well as one physician at Lighthouse Clinic (Virtual RAAC) and one physician at Access Central (Vancouver Community). A 14 bed inpatient medical withdrawal management unit is also staffed by one physician as part of St. Paul’s Hospital’s new Road to Recovery Initiative.
Physicians work in one-week blocks from approximately 08:30h – 17:00h Monday to Friday
and provide overnight call coverage (17:00h – 08:00h, Level 3 MOCAP) approximately one night per weekday.
Weekends: For every two weeks of service on the AMCT, RAAC or virtual RAAC, physicians provide
one weekend of call coverage. The AMCT and RAAC are both staffed by two physicians on Saturday
and Sunday (09:00h – 17:00h). Both services are often supported by medical trainees on weekend
days. One night of overnight call coverage (17:00h – 09:00h, Level 3 MOCAP) is provided per
weekend. For every week of Road to Recovery, physicians provide overnight call coverage for
admitted patients only.
Compensation and commitment:
Physicians receive blended compensation through either Medical Services Plan billing or hospital
sessional support for services provided. We are seeking a minimum of 10-12 weeks of service per
year.
Qualifications
Successful candidate will be Licentiates of the Medical Council of Canada and hold a current BC
Medical License with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of BC, and meet credentialing
requirements at PHC (this includes sign-off from the applicant’s respective Department Head).
Applicants who have completed formal addiction medicine training (e.g., enhanced skills or a
fellowship) will be prioritized. Qualified applicants will be licensed (or eligible for licensure) with the
College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC (CPSBC), have CCFP or RCPSC certification, have completed their POATSP training and will be ACLS certified.

We invite you to join us as we work towards building a better system of addiction care for all British Columbians.
