Subspecialty General

Role and Facility Information

Within the context of a patient and family-centered model of care, and in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of Providence Health Care (“Providence”), the Division of General Surgery (Department of Surgery) is seeking a General Surgeon at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital, to start June 2025.

Providence is seeking a fellowship-trained General Surgeon with endoscopy skills for a 1.0 FTE General Surgery position at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital (“MSJ”). Advanced minimally invasive surgery training is an asset.

The successful candidate will have access to 1.0 FTE of elective OR time and endoscopy time which translates to approximately 3 OR days (8am-5pm) per month and 24-30 endoscopy slots per month. The surgeon will also have access to ad hoc elective OR time across PHC that is variably available on short notice. The surgeon is expected to refrain from elective breast surgery, and the scope of the remainder of the elective practice will fall within the resource capabilities of Mount Saint Joseph Hospital.

The successful candidate will be expected to fully participate in General Surgery and GI Service Call at MSJ which is shared with 6 other General Surgeons. The surgeon will receive level 1 MOCAP plus fee for service billings during their call weeks. Emergency add-on surgery and endoscopy can be scheduled following the elective slates and there is capacity to call the OR team back for urgent cases.

The successful candidate is expected to participate in medical and resident clinical teaching as the need arises. There will not be any academic or administrative requirements.

The successful candidate will be expected to bear their own office expenses. There is shared office capacity with some incumbent general surgeons available.

The expected start date is approximately June 2025.

MSJ is a community hospital in Vancouver and is part of Providence Health Care. While there is no ICU, there is a High Acuity Unit (essentially a stepdown unit). The surgical program is known for efficiency and perennially scoring highly on NSQIP quality measures. Its clinical work is tilted towards outpatient surgery but there is capacity for inpatient post operative care on a mixed medical/surgical ward.

The successful candidate will also exemplify Providence’s values and contribute to a culture of equity, diversity, and inclusion. In addition, Providence is committed to our responsibilities on Truth and Reconciliation. We hold ourselves accountable for making our care, facilities and services a safer experience for Indigenous patients, residents, families, staff and Medical Staff.
