The core purpose of the Providence Health Care [PHC] Division of PM&R is “to optimize care and function for people and populations experiencing impairments, diseases, or disabilities, while innovating to provide quality clinical care, research, and education”. Currently, the PHC Division of PMR provides a full spectrum of consultative care in acute care, rehabilitation units, long-term care, and outreach settings.
The extensive acute care Physiatry consultative services occur at St. Paul’s Hospital [SPH], Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital [MSJ], and other partnering institutions such as Vancouver General Hospital amongst others. PHC includes one of the largest specialized rehabilitation facilities in BC at Holy Family Hospital, with both inpatient and outpatient multidisciplinary services. The 65-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit focuses on the delivery of specialized rehabilitation of the older adult with neurological (mostly stroke), orthopedic, and amputee/prosthetic needs.
Forward-looking, there are opportunities to grow in the clinical, research, and education domains as detailed in the recent Division of PM&R strategic plan. There are opportunities to collaborate even further for multi-specialty care, which will be particularly relevant leading up to the New St. Paul’s Hospital. Secondly, there is active development of a Rehabilitation Research and Innovation Lab at Holy Family Hospital in a team-based setting, with extensive opportunities to partner with Providence Research and other research institutions.
Finally, there is an expectation of mentorship and training as appropriate to PHC residents, as well as opportunities to further the education goals for medical students and rehabilitation staff.
