Role and Facility Information

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Providence Health Care is seeking a full-time Medical Biochemist. The candidate will join three other Medical Biochemists and one Clinical Chemist based at St. Paul’s Hospital, a 455-bed tertiary academic hospital located in downtown Vancouver, BC. The health organization has major programs in HIV/AIDS, transplant, cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology, colorectal surgery, breast surgery, endocrinology, gerontology, long-term care, and rehabilitative medicine.

The Division of Medical Biochemistry provides diagnostic testing and medical interpretive advice to all hospital services and delivers numerous specialized diagnostic services to the Province of British Columbia. Additionally, St. Paul’s Hospital Laboratory provides pathology and laboratory medicine services for the Yukon Territory. St. Paul's Hospital is the sole provincial resource for multiple specialized endocrine and lipid testing services and is currently in transition to be future home of BC Clinical Toxicology and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Program. Our laboratory is recognized for expertise in small-molecule and protein mass spectrometry for a broad range of clinical applications. In addition, St. Paul’s Hospital Laboratory will be moving to the New St. Paul’s Hospital in early 2027 where we will have a new equipment for core chemistry, hematopathology, virology/microbiology and anatomical pathology.

Applicants must hold an MD and be a member of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada in Medical Biochemistry (or be eligible for the same). Physicians with equivalent training from countries other than Canada may apply but must be eligible for licensure by the BC College of Physicians and Surgeons.

Prior experience and a clinical/research focus will be considered assets. Teaching of undergraduates and residents is integral to our work. The successful candidate will be appointed to the University of British Columbia Clinical Faculty with academic rank commensurate with prior rank.
