Specialty Internal Medicine

Subspecialty General Internal Medicine

Role and Facility Information

The Comox Valley Campus of the North Island Hospital in the beautiful and family-friendly Comox Valley is seeking two full time General Internal Medicine specialists. Applicants must hold Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada (FRCPC) certification or equivalent, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

The successful applicant will join a collegial group of internists which will include (when current recruitment is complete) 9 general internists, 2 GIM/Intensivists, 2 respirologists, an endocrinologist and a gastroenterologist. Clinical duties will include inpatient GIM coverage including weeks of telemetry unit coverage. The ICU weekly rotation is fully subscribed, so regular ICU shifts are not a part of this job posting at this time. Participation in the medicine call schedule is mandatory with a 1:9 frequency of night call which includes cross covering the community-level ICU. Overnight call is supported by MOCAP funding, and it is not required to remain on-site overnight. Candidates will also be expected to engage in an outpatient general internal medicine practice to support the growing need for internal medicine services in our community. There will be opportunity to participate in interpreting hospital based ECGs, Holter monitors and Exercise Stress tests.

In addition to clinical duties, the successful applicants will work with hospital administration and their colleagues to support local educational activities including teaching the UBC medical students, Family Practice residents, and Internal Medicine residents. There will be opportunities to participate in coordinating multidisciplinary quality improvement initiatives. Candidates may qualify for recruitment incentives through the Ministry of Health Rural Subsidy Agreement.

The Comox Valley medical community is a collegial group of physicians, nurse practitioners, dentists and midwives who share common values of medical excellence and a balanced lifestyle. This balance includes great programs and facilities for families and the availability of outstanding year-round recreational activities.

We look forward to receiving applications from qualified physicians who would seriously consider making the Comox Valley their home. In the interim, locum opportunities may also be available, which would afford an opportunity to experience Comox first-hand.

Please note that we are currently recruiting for 2 Internal Medicine positions with the above job description. We are also concurrently recruiting for an additional Community Internal Medicine position which could be full time or part time, encompassing outpatient clinic work but without any hospital component, and with no requirement to participate in overnight call. We are also in the process of recruiting a second outpatient Repirologist for the community.
