Role and Facility Information

Northern Health is seeking a Midwife to join a well-established Prenatal Clinic in Fort St John BC, a young and growing community with 650+ births per year. Our Prenatal Clinic and Birthing Centre are conveniently located within Fort St John Hospital.

The expected commitment is at least 144 hours of work in a month (details to be discussed) at our Birthing Centre. Opportunities to work at full and expanded scope of practice. You would work collaboratively with the Family Practice Maternity Group to provide care in the Prenatal Clinic and would be expected to cover between 6-8 calls (24-hour call shifts) per month.

The system of remuneration is via pooled billings and eventual split between providers for services covered. Estimated earnings:

Clinic only: $1,000 per day (9am-5pm)
Clinic + On Call (24-hour call): $2,200 per day
On Call only (24-hour call): $1,700 per day

The Prenatal Clinic would also be covered when on call (between 9am - 5pm) on weekdays. There may be opportunities to cover the Prenatal Clinic (without on-call) on weekdays outside of pre-scheduled mandatory calls, depending on provider availability.

Fort St. John Hospital is a new state-of-the art 55 bed hospital and 123 bed residential care facility serving a population of approximately 25,000 and a catchment area of approximately 70,000.

Fort St. John is known as “The Energetic City” and is located at Mile 47 of the world famous Alaska Highway! The city has numerous restaurants, cafés, and a health food store. It is the cultural and commercial hub of the Northeast, with a performing and visual arts centre, library, art gallery and theatre.

Recreational opportunities in the Fort St. John area include speed-skating (on one of only four indoor Olympic-sized, long-track speed skating ovals in North America!), indoor walking track, indoor soccer, golf, tennis, yoga, dance, mountain biking, walking trails, hiking, boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing, hunting, camping, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, curling, and hockey. Enjoy our weekly downtown Farmer's Market, open from May to October! Fort St. John always has something for you to do whether it's summer or winter!

Fort St John Regional Airport offers numerous daily flights to Calgary and Vancouver, on WestJet and Air Canada.

Fort St. John has seven elementary schools, two middle schools, one high school, and one private school (Kindergarten to Grade 12). Northern Lights College provides post-secondary education.

The region's main industries are agriculture, forestry, natural gas, construction, and transportation.
