Do you have a passion for nursing? We have the position for you! We are seeking a motivated Registered Nurse with a dedication for delivering compassionate patient care to join our team at Kitimat General Hospital.
Under the direction of the Unit Manager of the Nurse in Charge of the Acute Care Unit, is responsible for the total nursing care rendered to the patients in her/his charge, and participation in the general activities of the Acute Care Unit. Work areas include Medical Surgical, Pediatrics, Maternity, Special Care, Palliative Care and Emergency Outpatients. Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) The Northern Health Regional Emergency Department Education Program (REDEP) utilizes a standardized, evidence informed on-line curriculum offered by Elsevier, called Emergency Nursing Orientation (ENO). Plans and provides direct nursing care to patients in accordance with the hospital policies and BCCNM Standards for Nursing Practice in British Columbia. This position reports to the Maternity Coordinator.
REDEP combines Elsevier's ENO online curriculum with a skills/simulation lab and clinical practicum to prepare registered nurses to provide safe and competent emergency nursing care, at a novice level. Preparation will be accomplished by:
•Introducing the basic topics, concepts, and practice guidelines that are fundamental to emergency nursing.
•Developing the specialized skills, knowledge, attitudes, and judgement required to provide safe, competent, and individualized care to the emergency patient.
•Promoting professionalism in emergency nursing.
•There are 2 training positions available for 2024/2025
•Northern Health provides placement support and funding for tuition, textbooks, and travel expenses for clinical placements, as required •Successful candidates may be required complete pre-requisite courses through part-time distance education, on their own time, prior to assuming this position
•Learners should expect to make a 4 month commitment for this education, which includes online and in-person learning
•Additional study time, outside of scheduled hours, may be required to successfully complete the program
•Flexibility for practicums is necessary
•Prior experience on an acute care ward (i.e. medical/surgical) preferred •Current BLS certification within a year is mandatory prior to the skills/simulation
•Preference for participants who have completed an electrocardiogram (ECG) course prior to beginning REDEP. (If needed participants can complete an Elsevier ECG module during theory
•Applicants must successfully complete the education program prior to working in the department
•Upon successful completion of the education program, Northern Health requires an eighteen (18) month return of service in a regular position in the area of nursing applicable to the education program.
•Qualified applicants will be considered first for specialty positions. If there are no qualified applicants, training lines will be awarded to unqualified applicants and training will be provided. Please indicate the site you are applying for on your cover letter.
Actual start date & hrs of work for education varies as education is on-going throughout 2023/2024.
Shift Rotation/Hours of work: Monday to Friday, Days, 08:00 to 16:00
Kitimat General Hospital and Health Centre is a 20-bed Acute Care unit including 2 maternity beds. It integrates Acute Care, residential care, public health and community care in one facility. The services include:

Kitimat Set in a beautiful and natural ocean, mountain and valley paradise, Kitimat is located on the Douglas Channel just a few miles off British Columbia’s inside passage. Kitimat was built in the 1950’s and is one of BC’s youngest coastal communities. Main industries include an aluminum smelter, a pulp and paper mill and a petrochemical manufacturer. The population of Kitimat is approximately 8,236. The community has three elementary schools, two secondary schools, and one post-secondary school. Qualifications
• Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant.
• Previous experience in all levels of care.
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certificate preferred.
• Previous experience in Maternity preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to deal with others effectively.
• Ability to operate related equipment.
• Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
• Ability to organize work.
