Subspecialty General

Role and Facility Information

The Fraser Health Authority (FHA) is seeking a general surgeon to join the collegial group at Chilliwack General Hospital (CGH). It is expected that the applicant will be able to undertake a broad range of community general surgery, including elective and emergent endoscopy.

The successful applicant will participate in a 1:6 call schedule. On average there will be two ORs and two endoscopy days every three weeks. Additional endoscopy days can be picked up with the Provincial Colon Screening Program. The group is affiliated with UBC, and there is opportunity for teaching on academic days, in addition to clinical preceptorship for medical trainees. Occasionally, surgical residents may also rotate at CGH. As a member of the Fraser Health medical staff, you will participate in the UBC medical education program and are expected to apply for a clinical faculty appointment in the Division of General Surgery, UBC.

Chilliwack General is a 138-bed hospital, with 24 surgical beds and an 8 bed ICU. It is a teaching site for the University of British Columbia (UBC), with 8 medical students and 16 family practice residents annually. The hospital is supported by full service general practitioners, as well as a large complement of Internal Medicine physicians with a variety of subspecialist interests. Other surgical specialties include urology, orthopedics, ENT and OBGYN. Diagnostic imaging is on site, except for MRI which is available in Abbotsford which is the closest tertiary referral centre.

Chilliwack is one of the fastest growing cities in British Columbia, with a population of about 110,000.  It is located 1.5 hours from Vancouver and is situated between the Fraser and the Vedder Rivers, in the natural beauty of the Fraser Valley. It is an ideal location for a community surgeon, whether it be to raise a family, own an acreage or pursue outdoor activities. The Fraser Valley boasts a seemingly unlimited number of recreational opportunities including camping, mountain biking, golfing, skiing and fishing.  With its proximity to Vancouver, the mountains, oceans and lakes, and BC's Interior, this area is a great place to live.
