Role and Facility Information

The Victoria Department of Anaesthesia at Island Health seeks suitable cardiac anaesthetists to join our team. We are a growing academic department providing services integrated across two tertiary hospital sites in Victoria. Affiliated with the University of British Columbia, and the Island Medical Program, responsibilities will include both direct clinical care and teaching of medical students and residents for all new members. Excellence in teaching and mentoring is considered essential.

The Royal Jubilee Hospital is a 500-bed tertiary care facility and the referral centre for cardiac surgery patients on Vancouver Island. Cardiac cases total approximately 800 per year.

You will function as part of a collegial 9-11 cardiac anesthesiologist team and your work will involve cardiac and all other surgical specialties offered at this centre. Cardiac anaesthesia accounts for about 60-70% of our practice.

Duties will include:

• Cardiac anaesthesia call with an opportunity to participate in general anaesthesia call

• Managing dedicated 24-hour coverage of a 9-bed cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVU) staffed by

cardiac anesthesiologists

• Providing peri-operative TEE service to all cardiac cases, CVU patients as needed, and occasional out-of-

OR patients, including for EP procedures.

• Preoperative assessments of cardiac surgery patients

• Anesthesia preoperative consultation clinic

• Care of acute pain service patients

• Teaching of medical students and residents

The successful applicant must have current experience managing postoperative cardiac surgery patients in the cardiovascular intensive care unit (CVU).

Eligible applicants hold Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in Anesthesiology and are eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C. Successful candidates will have a strong history of success in all domains of the CanMeds roles outlined by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC.

Potential applicants will have spent significant time in our department, either as a trainee or locum. New members will be required to perform a quality improvement project or similar during their time as a provisional member in order to progress to active status. Time with our department as a locum or trainee

will enable potential candidates to identify the needs within our department for such a project. There are options for funding projects at Island Health.
