Subspecialty Addiction Medicine

Role and Facility Information

The successful candidate will provide Addiction Medicine services to clients requiring medical withdrawal from substances. Withdrawal Management Services- South Island (WMS-SI) is located in Victoria and accepts patients from any community in the Island Health region based on acuity.

Physicians working at the WMS support those requiring supervised medical detox in an in-patient unit. Daily medical rounds, including assessment, managing withdrawal, medication management, and managing ongoing or new medical conditions are included in the direct patient care. In addition, consulting with family physicians, hospital emergency rooms, psychiatrists, hospitalists and psychiatric emergency services are expected. The site operates 24/7 with the physician as MRP. The expectation is for the physician to be on-site 6-7.5 hours per day and manage telephone-based after hours call.

Island Health is affiliated with the UBC Faculty of Medicine Island Medical Program, and the successful candidate will be required to provide teaching and training to medical students and residents. A clinical faculty appointment at UBC will be required, and assistance in applying for a faculty appointment can be provided.
