Role and Facility Information
Opened in March 2011, the Cowichan Maternity Clinic (CMC) is a Primary Care Maternity clinic located in the Cowichan District Hospital adjacent to the maternity ward. Come and join a collegial and high-functioning multidisciplinary team of six highly skilled FPs and three registered midwives (including one Lactation consultant) providing OB care to women in the Cowichan Region.
Our staff includes an RN and two part-time MOAs. Our practice is well supported by local OB/Gyn, Pediatricians, and Anesthetists. We provide antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care to women up to six weeks postpartum. The caseload is approximately 250 deliveries per year shared by the group. A new hospital is set to open in May 2027 with expected increased delivery numbers.
Patient Population & Community Focus
Approximately 10% of the local population is Indigenous and about 30% of our maternity patients are Indigenous. As such, our community would likely appeal to a physician who is interested in Indigenous health.
Education & Training
Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education is an important part of our practice—with four x third-year Integrated Clerkship (ICC) students per year as well as Family Medicine Residency program.
Practice & On-Call Model
We have a shared on-call and clinic model. We provide midwife home visits in the first week postpartum.
Work in the CMC is easily combined with other FP work in the community: Longitudinal Family Medicine practice and locums, Indigenous Health, Hospital Inpatient coverage, etc. Details are available upon request.
Income Model: Pooled income within the group of physicians/midwife, shared as a per diem payment for call and clinic shifts.
