Specialty Pediatrics

Subspecialty General

Role and Facility Information

The University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Pediatrician with interest in Child and Youth Mental Health and Developmental / Behavioural Pediatrics. This position in Prince George includes no commitment to acute medical pediatrics, with no expectation to participate in general pediatric hospital on call coverage. The successful applicant is expected to establish a private consulting practice (payment is fee-for-service), but there will likely also be the opportunity for sessional work with the Northern Health Assessment Network (doing assessments for Complex Developmental Behavioural Conditions, Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) throughout the entire Northern Health region, and with Foundry in Prince George. In addition, there is the potential for outreach and telehealth clinics for consulting mental health and developmental/behavioural pediatrics throughout northern BC, including appointments with children living in First Nations/reserve communities or very remote communities.

The successful applicant will work with a collegial team of General Pediatricians at UHNBC in Prince George, British Columbia. UHNBC is the regional referral centre for northern British Columbia, and is affiliated with the Northern Medical Program of the University of British Columbia (UBC). The UHNBC group of eight general pediatricians serves a geographical area of approximately 600,000 km and a population of approximately 400,000.

UHNBC has a Level II B NICU, a pediatric inpatient unit and a pediatric ambulatory care clinic. In addition, there is an inpatient adolescent psychiatry unit. The Prince George Child Development Centre serves children with special needs and is staffed by specialized occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech language therapists. The Northern Health Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Clinic is in Prince George, and there are community-based mental health centres for children and youth in Prince George. There are many children with complex mental health, developmental and behavioural challenges in the community and throughout the region. A pediatrician dedicated to this population would have a large referral base from which to draw with no shortage of work. We seek a passionate, committed general pediatrician with interest in mental health issues and developmental/ behavioural challenges to join our community in order to continue to improve the quality of life of the children and youth of northern BC.
