Role and Facility Information
Northern Health is seeking a Clinical Psychiatrist to join the Department of Psychiatry in Prince George.
We welcome all interested candidates, including new in practice physicians and those holding a provisional license!
The Department of Psychiatry of the University Hospital of Northern Health (UHNBC) has full-time and/or part-time opportunities for Psychiatrists providing Adult General Psychiatry services. An interest in ECT and/or neurostimulation would be an asset.
There are inpatient psychiatry opportunities as well as outpatient opportunities. The outpatient opportunities are largely split into two services. The COAST team provides services for people with severe persistent mental illnesses such as Psychotic Disorders and Bipolar Disorders. The CAST team provides services for people with anxiety disorders, depressive disorders and personality disorders.
There is an opportunity for either Telehealth to support rural and remote communities or travel to rural communities. On call responsibility is mandatory for UHNBC psychiatry services. As Northern Health is part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Northern Medical Program there is opportunity for training of medical students and residents and applying for a clinical appointment is expected.
Administrative duties of the position include attending clinical team meetings and Department of Psychiatry meetings.
UHNBC is the Regional Hospital for Northern BC serving both the immediate population of Prince George (approximately 87,000) and is a referral center for outlying communities (total population approximately 400,000). It is the main teaching center for Medical Students in the Northern Medical Program of UBC and provides teaching for UBC Residents in several specialties. A Cancer Centre opened on the hospital site in the fall of 2012 which includes Radiation and Medical Oncology. The ongoing development of UHNBC as a Regional Center and teaching center makes this an exciting time to join the Medical community in Prince George.
Prince George is the centre of business, education, health and culture for northern British Columbia and services a rural population of about 300,000. The region’s economic growth and diversification strategies are creating outstanding opportunities for investors, employers and employees. Affordable housing, land prices and transportation costs, due to short and quick commutes; result in one of the lowest costs of living for a city of its size in the province. Additionally, wage rates fall above provincial averages, providing residents of Prince George with a high standard of living in one of BC’s most beautiful regions.
The city itself is the 4th largest in British Columbia and has a population of approximately 77,000. It is built on the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako rivers. Prince George is the home of the University of Northern British Columbia – Canada’s Green university. The warm, friendly and diverse population attests to a strong and dynamic community spirit.
If you are currently practicing or within one year of graduating, and are interested in opportunities in Northern BC, we would invite you and your spouse\partner to come and explore practice opportunities and the city of Prince George.
