Role and Facility Information
The Department of Medicine is seeking qualified family physicians to join our General Internal Medicine Clinical Associate program. Opportunities exist for both full time or part time positions.
Clinical associates on the CTU (Clinical Teaching Service) work as part of a team including a general internist (who is MRP), a clinical pharmacist and a variety of learners including third year medical students, family practice residents and senior medical residents. The CTU service is one of two inpatient services which admit complex medical patients to the hospital on alternating nights. Patients admitted to the CTU service are generally multi-system, complex medical patients and we are supported by a strong family practice program.
The CTU Clinical associate plays a critical role on the team, assisting the learners in managing most of the day-to-day operations on the ward. A strong interest in medical education is essential to success in the role. Responsibilities include assisting the learners with organizing patient transfers, documenting progress notes, facilitating complex discharges, dictating their discharge summaries and supervising / teaching procedures such as thoracentesis, paracentesis, and lumbar puncture depending on individual experience and comfort level. The clinical associate will often be asked to complete WBAs (workplace-based assessments) for the students and residents on observed interactions on the ward and at times provide reference letters for student applications to residency or fellowship. The Clinical associate will be consulted regularly by the UNBC program site lead to identify struggling learners and provide feedback on performance. A general internist supervises the team and assists with all aspects of patient care.
Applicants should have a strong interest in acute-care inpatient medicine. Hospitalist experience would be an asset but not required. Licensure or eligibility for licensure with the CPSBC is mandatory as well as ACLS. Procedural skills are an asset, but these skills can be developed with us.
Hours are 0800-1600h Monday to Friday with occasional weekend rounding required but no more than 1 in 4. No evenings or overnight call required at this time. Payment is by Sessional Contract (approx $300k/yr).
