Role and Facility Information
Sorrento is the town centre of a rural community in the South Shuswap of British Columbia. The area is home to 10,000 residents, many of which are unattached to a physician, a population that doubles in the summer months when cottagers return to their lakeside retreats and tourists flock to the sunny shores of Shuswap Lake.
Sorrento is also the location of a community health centre providing primary care for this lakeside community. The Centre was established in 2013 when the community was successful in attracting a Nurse Practitioner. The Centre has expanded to 2 NP's, three well equipped examination rooms, employs a full-time Medical Office Assistant and has room to expand. If wishing to establish a practice in the community health centre, preplanning is required to review space availability and requirements.
The community is the epicentre of health care in the area with three dentists, a chiropractor, a naturopath, two massage therapists, an audiologist and a progressive pharmacist who is also the landlord for the Health Centre. Shuswap General Hospital is 25 minutes away in Salmon Arm to which physicians may apply for privileges. The Shuswap North Okanagan Division of Family Practice is very supportive of new physicians moving to the area.
The community health centre was established following the retirement of our family physician of 35 years who raised three successful youngsters in this community, all of whom have gone on to challenging and successful careers, one a specialist in medicine. The rural community is a great place to raise a family or to retire. Younger families have recognized the value of a rural upbringing and recently been replacing the retirees who have aged in place for as long as they could. Meanwhile, there continues to be an active, vibrant community of retirees.
The activities available to a family are limitless and the community is supportive of new leisure time initiatives.
We are seeking a family physician to augment the services we currently provide. Physicians are eligible for the benefits of the Rural Practice Subsidiary Agreement which provides rural incentives including funding opportunities for continuing medical education, a Rural GP Locum Program which provides locum physicians the opportunity to arrange subsidized relief for vacation, education or health needs, a recruitment and retention bonus and a rural premium to top up the College fee schedule.
Consider the advantages of establishing in a rural community to raise your family or to prepare for your retirement.
