Mental Health and Substance Use Nurse (RN/RPN),

What you’ll do

Provide direct mental health and substance use care to client presenting with a wide variety and complexity of illness/disease including communicable disease, addiction, mental health, and general health issue. Perform physical, addiction, and psychiatric assessment, collect specimen, refer client to the physician for further examination, administer prescribed treatment and medication according to protocol, and make appropriate adjustment.
Observe, monitor, evaluate, assess, and document client progress, symptom, and behavioral change and perform a variety of mental health and substance use intervention utilizing nursing skill and medical equipment including therapeutic intervention using a variety of modality. Initiate and facilitate discharge planning; identify referral to other health professional.
Provide counseling, education, and group programming support to client using a trauma-informed, motivational, and health promotion approach regarding mental health and substance use issue and concern.
Work collaboratively with other health care professional, client, family, and community in the identification and resolution of mental health and substance use issue, cultural and language barrier, ethical dilemma, and coordination and integration of care, and make referral to other service provider as appropriate.
Maintain accurate computerized and paper record in accordance with established procedure and policy; prepare and maintain statistical information, correspondence, report, and other documentation. Document client/family perspective and nursing observation.
Use appropriate supply and equipment in accordance with departmental standard and safe care requirement. Problem-solve equipment malfunction with technical staff. Handle, store, and dispose of workplace hazardous material and sharp in accordance with established procedure.




What you bring



Qualifications

Current practicing registration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse or as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nursing Professionals (BCCNP).
Two 2 years’ recent experience providing acute or community health nursing care/services to clients who have concurrent psychiatric and/or mental health and substance use disorders or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.




Skills and Knowledge

Working knowledge of community health nursing theory including mental health and addictions, communicable diseases and practice within a client/family -centered approach.
Working knowledge of BCCNP's Standards for Nursing Practice.
Knowledge of the BC Mental Health Act, other facilities and community resources.
Working knowledge of facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution techniques. Demonstrated ability to adjust to new or unexpected events
Demonstrated case management, teaching/training, clinical support and consultation skills.
Awareness of and commitment to learning and understanding the Truth & Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action (2015), In Plain Sight Report (2020), BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019), and other related reports.
Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).
As a strong asset for consideration, we are looking for our successful candidate to have: Knowledge of social, economic, political and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.)

Wage: $40.21 - $57.78 per hour
