Role and Facility Information

Island Health has 2 full-time positions for an expanding Department of Pediatrics in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia.

Join a collegial team of 18 consulting general Pediatricians and establish a robust community consulting practice. This group provides call coverage at Victoria General Hospital (VGH) and provide service weeks on the clinical teaching unit and level II NICU. Call is approximately 3-4 shifts per month, on-site/in-house call. Call is funded hourly according to MOCAP (on-site, on-call), with an urgent availability top-up in addition to fee for service billing. On-call pediatrician covers consults in ED, LDR, and postpartum ward. Pediatricians cover deliveries for babies at 30 weeks gestation and above. They also cover emergent NICU issues and deliveries below 30 weeks until offsite neonatologist arrive. Call group pediatricians also participate in an Urgent Pediatric Access Clinic with teaching focus.

The Department of Pediatrics in Victoria provides services to a 350,000 direct referral population. VGH serves as the community and regional tertiary pediatric center for Vancouver Island. You will join staff consisting of general pediatricians, with pediatric-specific subspecialty support including NICU, PICU, cardiology, respirology, neurology, nephrology, rheumatology, endocrinology, pediatric general surgery, pediatric urology, hematology, oncology, allergy & immunology.

The successful applicants will be expected to establish and maintain a robust community consulting practice to meet the needs of the community and participate in medical student and resident teaching in office and in hospital.

Eligible applicants will hold Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada certification in Pediatrics and be eligible for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of B.C.

To continue to build the robust pediatric program at VGH, the successful applicants will be expected to participate in departmental initiatives, QI projects, committees etc. The successful candidates will have exemplary communication and interpersonal skills with a team and growth mindset.

The successful applicants will be expected to apply for a UBC Clinical Faculty Appointment and be a committed member of clinical teaching faculty. Pediatricians in Victoria have an active teaching role for undergraduate and postgraduate learners both at VGH and in their community offices. Trainees include medical students through the Island Medical Program, Family Medicine Residents, Royal College Residents and Pediatric Residents. In addition, VGH is home to 8 Pediatric Residents (2 per year) as part of a distributed Pediatric Postgraduate Training Program through the UBC Department of Pediatrics

A willingness to support our regional centers with occasional call support would be desirable.
