Texada Island, the largest of the Gulf Islands, is located north of Vancouver just off the coast of the city of Powell River. It is separated from the B.C mainland by Malaspina Strait. Rich mineral assets were discovered here in 1876, creating a boom. Today the economy is primarily based in the paper manufacturing and limestone quarrying industries. The island is known for its spectacular beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities, which include hiking, cycling, beachcombing, camping, kayaking, and scuba diving in some of the clearest waters on the coast.
