Community Description:

Williams Lake is in BC’s Central Interior Region, otherwise known as the Cariboo Chilcotin Region, and is famous for the annual Williams Lake Stampede. There is a population of approximately 35,000 in Williams Lake and surrounding areas with a total population of 62,000 for the Cariboo Regional District. A vast array of lakes, rivers and hiking and biking trails, makes Williams Lake and the surrounding area a great place for outdoor enthusiasts to camp, fish, hunt and play during the summer months while winter months bring the enjoyment of snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, and ice fishing for the winter months. Williams Lake has something for everyone.

Hospital Description:

Cariboo Memorial is under renovation with planned completion of 2026! The CMH redevelopment project includes an addition to the existing hospital as well as renovations to the existing facility. The addition will add 25 in-patient beds for a total of 53, a new emergency department and mental-health unit.

Currently, CMH is a Level 2 Community Hospital in Williams Lake with 28 inpatient beds. CMH hospital offers ER, OR, Med-Surg, and Obstetrical units. Lab and diagnostic imaging and outpatient Hemodialysis Unit are operated on-site.

Deni House is adjacent to CMH, embodies a resident centered philosophy designed to help people function at their highest level and provide the best quality of life. Deni House has 13 private and 5 3-bed rooms. Nine of the beds are designated as short stay including 2 palliative beds, and ALCP’s (2beds).

We see ~22,000 ER visits/year. Our 24/7 Emergency Room has the capacity to be staffed with 8 full-time emergency physicians. In this rural community, CCFP, CCRP (EM) and FRCP Emergency Physicians are all invited to practice in Williams Lake. Shifts are 8 hours but with the option to work a 12 hour shift. Our full time ER Line is 14 shifts per month with the option to take on additional shifts. You will see a broad range of interesting cases with high volume and acuity. You are well supported by specialists in Internal Medicine, Ob/Gyn, General Surgery, Pediatrics. The Cariboo Memorial Hospital (CMH) is part of the rural teaching program for UBC Medical School. The ER may have medical students and residents that you can provide teaching opportunities. Within the medical community, there are many other opportunities if you desire to broad our scope of practice too.
