Elkford:
In the heart of the Rocky Mountains surrounded by lush forests stippled with alpine meadows, majestic waterfalls, and pristine lakes, is the picturesque community of Elkford. As The Wilderness Capital of BC, Elkford prides itself in attracting visitors with cameras, binoculars and sketchpads to view the raw natural beauty and diverse wildlife in the area.
Elkford is supported by a prosperous coal industry, and is home to public schools, downtown core, recreation centre, library complex (includes pool), golf course, ice rink, natural hot springs and a community-owned ski hill. This spectacular area offers abundant outdoor recreational opportunities including hiking and biking trails, horseback riding, snowmobiling, ATV and backpacking adventures, camping, skiing (alpine and x-country), fishing, hunting, snowshoeing and skating.
The town is located near the Continental Divide trail, where adventure events (such as the Tour Divide), connect Elkford with the towns of Banff, Canmore, and Kananaskis country. World-class ski areas, such as Fernie Alpine and Big Mountain, Montana are within a 1 -2.5-hour drive. Larger centres such as Calgary, Lethbridge and Whitefish, Montana are within three-hours travel time. Smaller service centres, such as Sparwood, Fernie, and Cranbrook are all within a ninety-minute commute.
Elkford Health Care Centre:
The Elkford Health Care Centre has an interdisciplinary team that provides emergency services, ambulatory care, laboratory/ diagnostic imaging, public health, chronic disease management, mental health/substance use and Primary Care Nursing. Additional support services include a Dietitian, Diabetes Educator, Respiratory Therapist, Physiotherapist and a full Admin support staff (MOA, Clinical Operations Manager).
Practice Details:
Exciting opportunity at the Elkford Health Care Centre (EHC) in Elkford, B.C. for physicians.
The EHC operates with a collegial and collaborative physician and nurse practitioner complement. The care team is small and cohesive with a focus on team-based care. Primary responsibilities involve provision of comprehensive longitudinal primary care. Episodic urgent care is also provided on a rotating basis, there is also the opportunity to cover evenings and weekends at the nearby Sparwood Emergency Department (open 08:00 – 19:00), if you are keen to utilize your ED skills.
The Primary Care team at Elkford is supported by a full-time primary care RN who works to full scope of practice, to improve patient access and quality of care provided in the Elkford clinic. The team consists of social work, mental health, dietitian, diabetes educator, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, home health, public health and maternity clinic. Currently, the clinic is co-located with an IH lab department and (limited) diagnostics (x-ray).
The Elkford clinic exemplifies the Patient Medical Home through a Teams-based care model. The nearest emergency department is in the nearby communities of Sparwood and Fernie, where the Elk Valley Hospital provides in-patient services. Nearest facility with higher levels of care is located in Cranbrook at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital.
Physicians working in Elkford qualify for locum coverage through the Rural Locum Program for British Columbia (43 days/year).
