Specialty Emergency Medicine

Subspecialty General

Role and Facility Information

The emergency departments of Providence Health (St. Paul’s Hospital [SPH] and Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital [MSJ]) are seeking emergency physicians to join our collegial group. Part-time as well as full-time work opportunities are available. Locums are also welcome to apply.

Vancouver is an internationally recognized city with beautiful scenery and year-round access to outdoor activities. This is an ideal location for those wishing to enjoy a rewarding medical career as well as a fulfilling lifestyle.

Our supportive group of approximately 50 emergency physicians provides emergency medicine care at both SPH and MSJ. We have an excellent relationship with our consulting services and have been recognized nationally for the quality of care provided to our patients. Our group prides itself on being innovative and exploring new models of patient care.

Many of the physicians in the group enjoy having a blended clinical practice of both EM and non-EM interests. These interests currently include Palliative Care/Addictions Medicine/Critical Care/Education/PoCUS/Prehospital and Transport Medicine/Ethics/Aeronautics/CQI/Rural outreach. Our group welcomes new members with novel skillsets or interest in building our department.

We have an internationally recognized group of clinician-scientists who have produced landmark research in the areas of cardiovascular emergencies, mental health, infectious diseases, substance use, and other topical areas. The research group publishes > 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts per year, and supervises trainees from all levels, including at the PhD and post-doctoral levels. Depending on experience and interest, the Department can provide partial salary support for motivated candidates.

We are committed to medical education and train medical students as well as residents from different specialty programs. SPH is the flagship training site for the University of British Columbia CCFP-EM Residency Program, the largest CCFP-EM program in the country. We have an active SIM program, regular departmental academic rounds, and participate in regional ED rounds.

Physician wellness and supporting career longevity has been a longstanding focus of our group. We therefore have a staff mentorship program, a sabbatical program, a leave of absence program, flexible scheduling, casino rotations overnight, and senior staff scheduling options.

We are looking for applicants who will add to the increasing diversity of our sites and EDI (Equity, Diversity, Inclusivity) principles will be followed for the hiring process. The successful applicant will have CCFP (EM), FRCPC (EM), or USA Certification in Emergency Medicine, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Updated ACLS and PALS vs APLS is required. ATLS or a similar trauma course is highly recommended. Competency with PoCUS is required. Priority will be given to those applicants who are proven team players and bring a unique skillset to the department. Compensation is through a Fee-For-Service model at SPH and via APP (alternate payment plan) at MSJ.

Site Information

SPH is located in downtown Vancouver and the emergency department sees over 90,000 patients a year. It is a tertiary care, academic referral center with numerous in-hospital specialty services. There are 11 EM shifts per day. SPH serves the downtown east side patient population of Vancouver. We have developed robust relationships with addictions, mental health, infectious diseases, aboriginal health, and community outreach programs. Given the hospital’s well-recognized cardiac program, the SPH emergency department has developed an ED ECMO program - the only such established program in the province. Currently there is a new, state of the art hospital being built with plans to relocate SPH in 2027. This provides a unique opportunity for interested applicants with novel ideas to become involved in the transformation of patient care at the new site.

Mount St. Joseph’s Hospital is a community hospital also centrally located in Vancouver that sees approximately 45,000 patients per year. The emergency department is open 8 am – 8 pm with 5 EM shifts per day. We see a diverse population and a range of adult and pediatric patients with special supports in place for the geriatric patient population. Our emergency department benefits from close relationships with in-hospital consultants and is further supported by specialists based at SPH.

Interested applicants are asked to provide a CV, a letter of interest, and references when applying. More information is available at the sphemerg.ca.
