Kelowna General Hospital (KGH) is one of two tertiary hospitals within Interior Health and is the region’s main referral centre offering a full range of services with approximately 400 beds and over 84,000 ED visits yearly. Kelowna General Hospital is home to the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre (IHSC) which opened in 2015 and is BC’s only cardiac critical care centre outside of Victoria and the Lower Mainland. IHSC is Kelowna General Hospital’s principal surgical site and features 12 specialized Operating Rooms created for Thoracic, Urology, Neurosurgery, Vascular, Plastics, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Ears Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General and Trauma surgeries with 2 ORs dedicated to Cardiac Surgery. Our state-of-the-art Centennial Building boasts a total of 360,000 square feet, an expanded emergency and ambulatory care department, new medical inpatient units, modern operating rooms and a rooftop helipad. Within the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre, KGH has a modern maternity ward and adjacent Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. KGH has a dedicated pediatric ward, as well as adolescent and adult psychiatry units. Enhanced laboratory and clinical departments are found in the new Dr. Walter Anderson Building. KGH is also a teaching centre for the Southern Medical Program affiliated with UBC and has an academic campus that serves as a satellite for the University of British Columbia Medical School. KGH has become one of BC’s leading healthcare centres.

The Interior Heart & Surgical Centre is seeking a Cardiac Surgical Assistant to join our group.
Located in the city of Kelowna, the Interior Heart & Surgical Centre is the main referral center for the Interior Health Authority (IH) of British Columbia (population 750,000). The Cardiac Surgery program offers the whole spectrum of cardiac surgical services short of transplantation. There is a six-bed Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit (CSICU) and a 14-bed Cardiac Surgery Inpatient (CSIP) ward. Heart transplants and pediatric (child) cardiac surgeries are not performed at KGH. The Cardiac Surgery Program is comprised of more than 100 medical and clinical staff, including 5 cardiac surgeons, cardiac anaesthetists, perfusionists, clinical nursing staff, anaesthesia assistants and support staff.
As the Cardiac Surgical Assistant, you will provide aid in exposure, hemostasis, closure, and other intraoperative technical functions that help the surgeon carry out a safe operation with optimal results for the patient. It is expected that the Cardiac Surgical Assistant will be able to perform independently in the OR to retrieve vascular conduit. In addition to intraoperative duties, the Cardiac Surgical Assistant also performs preoperative and postoperative duties to better facilitate proper patient care. The Cardiac Surgical Assistant will also provide on call services.
In this position you will also have the opportunity to discover the rewards of clinical teaching with 3rd and 4th year medical students of the UBC Southern Medical Program completing 1-2 week rotations with our program.
