Innovative new position with Interior Health: Medical Director, Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE).

In accordance with the established vision and values of the organization, the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination (SAFE) Medical Director is responsible for the ongoing development, growth, and objectives of the SAFE program. The Medical Director must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and an understanding of the interdependent roles of various allied health professions. The SAFE Medical Director is responsible for promoting high standards of practice through support of SAFE policies, protocols and practice guidelines; participating in performance improvement monitoring; staff education and SAFE research. The Medical Director will be responsible for SAFE follow up for patients throughout Interior Health (IH).

Reporting to the Director, Emergency Services Network, the SAFE Medical Director shall be expected to work collaboratively with the seven (7) SAFE site coordinators, Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS), and the Emergency Services Network Transformation Lead. The SAFE Program Medical Director will collaborate with coordinators to monitor the SAFE program across the health authority. The Director will also liaise between coordinators, physicians, administrators, Medical Advisory Committees and external stakeholders in order to align SAFE care with provincial mandates and national/international best practice guidelines.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITY

1. In collaboration with the Director of Emergency Services Network, the CNS, on-site SAFE co-ordinators, and administrative leaders, the Medical Director, supports and implements the IH SAFE program philosophy, goals and objectives, consistent with the philosophy, mission statement, organizational objectives and strategic plan of the Agency.

2. Actively participates in IH wide leadership in aspects of quality, patient safety, planning, operations, utilization management and evaluations of medical and physician services, applicable to SAFE patient care.

CLINICAL SERVICE

1. Promote high quality standards of SAFE care clinical practices.

2. Provide guidance and consultation to the SAFE on site coordinators, Emergency Department physicians, SAFE physicians, and other physicians to develop and maintain common clinical care goals and objectives.

3. Collaboratively work to implement and monitor SAFE benchmarks.

4. Work collaboratively with SAFE on-site coordinators on performance improvements appropriate to the SAFE program.

5. Collaboratively implement program practices to assure continued compliance with clinical guidelines established by by the Canadian Forensic Nurses Association (CFNA) and International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN).

6. Participate in physician orientation to SAFE practice and SAFE physician performance appraisal.

7. Participate in local, regional, national, and provincial activities to forward SAFE work within IH.

8. Provide telephone, telehealth, or in person follow up to SAFE patients.

9. Participate in community of practice meetings and grand rounds.

10. Respond to questions from SAFE staff.

11. Assist SAFE examiners with court preparation and follow-up.

12. Lead or participates in research projects as they relate to SAFE as appropriate.

13. Keep current in matters of medical and forensic assessment and treatment of sexual assault.

14. Promote performance monitoring, quality assurance, and quality improvement and utilization management activities for the services provided within SAFE.

LEADERSHIP

1. Collaborate and assist the onsite coordinators to support the IH SAFE program goals and deliverables.

2. Participate in review, research, and development of SAFE policies, protocols and clinical practice guidelines.

3. Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships with colleagues, referral physicians, hospital personnel, and patients/families in order to achieve maximum operational effectiveness.

4. Promote a cooperative and collaborative working environment among the clinical disciplines involved in SAFE care.

5. Participate in, and/or lead, hospital outreach educational activities.

6. Provide direction and work collaboratively in the monitoring of patient care, and the performance of the SAFE program deliverables.

7. Represent the SAFE program where appropriate on local committees or forums.

8. Attend local and national meetings and conferences to remain current regarding issues relevant to the performance of duties.
