BC Cancer – Kelowna

BC Cancer (BCC) is accepting applications for a part-time pain and symptom management/palliative care physician to be based at the Cancer Centre in the beautiful city of Kelowna, BC. The position is part-time and is intended to be combined with palliative care work for Interior Health, which we can help facilitate. Kelowna General Hospital has a small Palliative Care Unit and consult service, and there is a residential hospice in Kelowna, as well as Vernon. This position is open immediately.

Kelowna is a vibrant mid-sized city in the southern interior region of British Columbia, surrounded by lakes, mountains, and vineyards. Situated in the heart of the Okanagan Valley, Kelowna is also known for dry sunny summers and mild winters with fresh powder snow in the mountains. It is one of the few places where one can ski and golf in the same day. Kelowna also is home to UBC Okanagan, an international airport, and is a growing hub for technology and aerospace companies. Altogether, Kelowna’s natural environment, developed facilities and infrastructure, and its strong sense of community bolsters its reputation as a tourist destination and a great place to live.

The successful applicant will participate in the clinical, educational and research activities of the Pain & Symptom Management/Palliative Care (PSMPC) Team, which include:

Addressing palliative care needs of ambulant cancer patients, integrated with oncological management, including those in the survivorship context.

Facilitating a coordinated approach and ensuring continuity of palliative care support through effective communication and transfers back to community-level physicians, home care/palliative care services.

Consulting and educating other BC Cancer care teams, and community-based care providers.

Engaging in research and education interests in palliative and supportive care. (Some scope for protected research time may be available.)

Providing public and provider education on palliative care and symptom management for oncology patients.

What you bring:

Eligibility for full licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.

Palliative Medicine Subspecialty Accreditation or equivalent training and experience, or a Certificate of Added Competency in Palliative Care (CAC) for CCFP applicants.

Eligibility for appointment to medical staff of BC Cancer, and Kelowna General Hospital.

Commitment to upholding the shared responsibility of creating lasting and meaningful reconciliation in Canada as per TRC (2015) and BC's Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (2019).

Knowledge of social, economic, political, and historical realities impacting indigenous communities and familiarity with Indigenous Cultural Safety and anti-racism and accompanying reports (BC DRIPA, TRC, etc.).
