Role and Facility Information
Surrounded by picturesque orchards, and vineyards framed by forested mountains, Oliver is known as the “Wine Capital of Canada”, and an ideal location for outdoor recreational pursuits. Oliver is located at the south end of BC’s Okanagan Valley and lies about 21 km north the US border crossing at Osoyoos and 42 km south of Penticton, BC. Oliver’s abundance of agriculture makes it easy to enjoy fresh local produce from fruit and vegetables stands. Opportunities for water sports, including windsurfing, canoeing and fishing, are almost limitless given the abundance of lakes in the area. Life in Oliver also offers activities such as cycling, wildlife viewing and horseback riding. The friendly multicultural community of Oliver is set apart by its unique story-book buildings that line the downtown area and its upbeat arts and music community. The South Okanagan General Hospital (SOGH) is a Level 1 Community Hospital in the Okanagan health service area that services a population of approximately 12,000 residents from the Oliver, Osoyoos and Okanagan Falls area and another 10,000 residents in surrounding rural areas. SOGH offers a 24/7 Emergency Department, 18 inpatient beds, on-site outpatient ambulatory, acute care, Allied Health Services, pharmacy, X-Ray and laboratory services. Most urgent referrals are made to Penticton Regional Hospital.
The SOGH Emergency Department has overlapping shift coverage during the busiest times of day, adjusted depending on the season. Shift times are 0700-1500, 1300-2000, and 1900-0700 in the winter, and daytime shifts are one hour longer in the busy months.
The collegial Emergency team in Oliver has 2 positions available. We have a great group of FP and FP-ER physicians from various backgrounds – including CCFP(EM) and FP-EM, who support the emergency at SOGH. CCFP-EM/FP-EM is not required but is always welcome.
We are proud to be actively involved in collaboration with the University of British Columbia’s Southern Medical Program and you will have the opportunity to make an impact on Family Practice Residents. Within the medical community, there are many other opportunities if you desire to broaden your scope of practice too.
For those interested, Leadership Development Opportunities are available with Interior Health’s NAVIG8 Program. The NAVIG8 Emerging Physician Leaders Program is a comprehensive leadership development program designed specifically for physicians to address the practical leadership knowledge, behaviours and skills that high potential, emerging medical leaders require to step into leadership roles early in their careers.
Locum opportunities are available if you would like to visit the area before making a permanent decision.
