Role and Facility Information
Kamloops:
Kamloops is a vibrant city of 100,000, at the northern extension of productive wine country in south central British Columbia. We sit in the middle of lakes, mountains, ski hills, and river systems. We enjoy biking, hiking, skiing, water sports, all right here in our backyard. Our community has an excellent educational system, organized sports, music and theatre. There are amenities not often found in smaller urban centres. University affiliations provide rejuvenation and an atmosphere to keep learning.
Royal Inland Hospital:
The Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) is a 273-bed facility that serves as the referral centre for approximately 250,000 people, and is located in the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap Health Service Area. As one of two Interior Health tertiary referral hospitals and Level 1 Trauma Centres, RIH receives over 250 major trauma and 72,000 ED visits per year.
The Phil and Jennie Gaglardi Tower opened at RIH in the summer of 2022. Among other services, the tower includes child and adolescent mental-health and substance-use inpatient unit as well as a 30 bed general psychiatric unit (20 general and 10 high observation beds and 3 seclusion beds).
Practice Details:
We are seeking a team-orientated and highly skilled Neurosurgeon for a general community practice, with a heavy portion of spine surgery at Royal Inland Hospital in beautiful Kamloops.
The Royal Inland Hospital deals with approximatively two thirds of the severe traumatology encountered in the Interior of British Columbia, both including cranial and spinal trauma. Pediatric and cerebrovascular neurosurgery, as well as more complex skull base neurosurgery are currently handled by quaternary centres in Vancouver (BC Children's and Vancouver General Hospital)
Currently the neurosurgical service is enjoying access to a new operating room, opened in the summer of 2022. Available are: 2 Stryker neuronavigation systems with cranial and spinal software for each, 2 updated operative microscopes with capacity to use 5-ALA, sets for trans-sphenoidal pituitary surgery.
Candidates would join a group of 5 full-time neurosurgeons sharing access to 5 to 7 elective OR days per week. Access to elective OR time is a function of call coverage.
RIH is affiliated with UBC Faculty of Medicine. Our surgeons are involved in teaching medical students and residents.
