Program Medical Director, Renal Services -

Exciting new Medical Leadership opportunity at Interior Health for a Program Medical Director, Renal Services.

This role is instrumental in the provision of administrative and clinical leadership for an IH wide Renal Services across the Health Authority. The Program Medical Director will work in a dyad relationship with the Program Director, from a systems and patient centered perspective, providing strategic direction and medical leadership to achieve quality performance and IH, BC Renal (BCR), BC Transplant (BCT) and MOH strategic priorities.

The Program Medical Director, Renal Services reports to the Vice President, North, Clinical Operations and works in a dyad relationship with the Program Director of Renal & Transplant Services.

Position Summary

The Program Medical Director will work in a dyad relationship with the Program Director to support the integration, standardization, and consolidation (where appropriate) of services within the Program working to support strategic initiatives and meet MOH, BCR, BCT, and IH targets and deliverables. This will include supporting and advancing clinical practice regionally (across IH) to meet standards, prioritizing renal services quality initiatives across IH and aligning renal initiatives, utilizing data resources, to support achievement of targets and deliverables. Success of the role is dependent upon the provision of leadership and support to physicians as well as engagement of other practitioners, Operational Leaders, and provincial partners. The Program Medical Director will be expected to work in a dyad relationship with the Program Director to create an inclusive approach to the development, implementation and monitoring of multi-site delivered Renal Services and to liaise between the ministry of health, BC Renal, BC Transplant, renal program and Clinical Operations teams, physician committees and physicians in order to represent physician viewpoints and facilitate open communication.

Key Responsibilities

STRATEGIC DIRECTION AND PROGRAM IMPERATIVES

1. Provides leadership to improve the quality of renal care in IH and support achievement of MOH, BCR, BCT, and IH strategic priorities and deliverables by collaborating directly with physicians, other health-care professionals, portfolios, committees and medical governance structures to improve patient safety and outcomes.

2. Provides administrative services to the IHA as the Program Medical Director, Renal Services to build the capacity for effective physician governance, physician integrated leadership, and engagement within IH.

3. Provides leadership expertise, direction, and support to the Chiefs of Staff, Department Heads, and Renal Site Medical Directors in the planning, designing, evaluating and implementing of innovative objectives for the IH Renal Program Services.

CLINICAL SERVICE

1. Promotes high quality standards of clinical care.

2. Provides guidance to Renal Medical Directors, Chiefs of Staff, Department Heads, other department members and other Medical Directors in developing and maintaining common clinical goals and objectives.

3. Promotes performance monitoring, quality assurance, and quality improvement and utilization management activities for the services provided within Renal Program Services.

4. Collaboratively implements program practices to assure continued compliance with guidelines established by Accreditation Canada.

5. Provides direction and recommendations in determining the appropriate means of allocating and structuring health services in Interior Health.

6. Fosters an environment supportive of research projects as they relate to renal care.

COLLABORATION

1. Facilitates a collaborative inter-professional environment that enhances a patient-focused and Regional (One IHA) approach to the provision of renal care and services across the continuum of care and health region. This includes co-chairing the Renal Quality Council with the Program Director.

2. Participates in Agency-wide leadership discussions for improving renal practices and services and on relevant Provincial and Interior Health Committees and Working Groups.

3. Participates on provincial committees as an IH representative, as directed by the VP, Clinical Operations, North.

4. Considers UBC and IH academic perspectives in strategy, planning, and promotion of clinical teaching and/or research opportunities and the recruitment of academic physicians.

5. Informs VP portfolios of Medical Staff issues, plans, or processes that may significantly impact the management of those portfolios.

6. Works collaboratively with VP portfolios on the development and implementation of strategic and operational plans and mitigation strategies.

7. Through physician engagement, facilitates the achievement of Ministry of Health as well as VPs’ operational and strategic objectives.

8. The Program Medical Director will be expected to participate in provincial and IH Committees as agreed during the process of setting annual objectives with the VP, North, Clinical Operations and the Director of the Program Services.

PATIENT SAFETY AND QUALITY

1. Facilitates implementation of patient safety and quality activities appropriate to the Program Services.

2. Collaborates with the Program Director to oversee the Renal Program.

3. Participates in other quality initiatives that deal with the care of patients.

4. Ensures appropriate systems are in place to monitor compliance with regional treatment guidelines, policies, and protocols.

5. Review and investigate all regional renal related inquiries in collaboration with the Program Director and refer to the appropriate site committees and/or care teams as required.

6. Ensures that quality and appropriateness of patient care processes are monitored and evaluated and that appropriate actions are taken on a consistent basis (based on findings).

7. Reports quality of care issues promptly to appropriate individuals, including the Program Director, Clinical Renal Team Leads, facility administration leaders, IH Medical Directors and/or the VP Quality & Medicine.

8. Identifies and works collaboratively to correct deficiencies in renal care policies, guidelines and protocols.

9. Participates and supports implementation of renal-related peer reviews and initiate action as necessary.

LEADERSHIP

1. Actively participates and engages with members of the leadership team and provides medical input into management in collaboration with senior administration.

2. Provides direction and works collaboratively in the monitoring of IH practice related to patient care, and the performance of the IH Renal Program Services.

3. Participates in the review, research, development and implementation of evidence-based renal and transplant policies, protocols and clinical practice guidelines.

4. When requested, and as appropriate at an IH Renal Program Services level, provides guidance and works collaboratively with the Program Director and the VP, North, Clinical Operations in the investigation of medical occurrences, and patient safety events as appropriate in order to ensure quality patient care is maintained.

5. Assists Medical Staff in understanding and working effectively within a regional health system.

6. Participates and/or leads regional outreach educational activities.

7. Maintains an effective working relationship with, and not limited to, IH medical staff, emergency department staff, administration, and other departments.

8. Functions as a liaison to other hospitals within the region.

9. Co-chairs regional committees and/or case review committees related to renal program services as appropriate.

10. Represents the Program and the Agency where appropriate on provincial and national Renal committees or forums.

11. Provides leadership and support for programs and initiatives within the Program and with the Agency in order to provide quality, patient safety and optimum clinical resource utilization.

12. Participates in planning activities related to Renal Program Services and for the Agency.
